Most students spend a lot of time on their degrees and ultimately realize that these degrees are not going to provide a guarantee for a job in the private sector. Students recall their college years and how they were sold the idea of providing for their countries with the things they have picked up in classes. “Internships give you this false idea of companies that are waiting to hire young and eager graduates to designated positions. I’ve come to find out that that was an illusion,” said Alemu, looking back on his school days. Having spent more than half their lives in schools, young people are hesitant about the idea of stepping into blue-collar jobs, even though most pay more than entry-level jobs. “I have no issue against blue-collar jobs but my parents who have invested so much in me would feel swindled if I were to abandon my years of study to settle for a blue-collar job I could have gotten years ago.
