The unexpected information from St. Paulos Hospital. Supreme Court President Meaza Ashenafi and African Court President Imani Aboud signed the Memorandum of Understanding (Mou) on Thursday.
This makes Ethiopia the first African nation to sign the agreement with the African Court – fully known as the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR). After signing the MoU, Supreme Court President Meaza said the African Court will have a partner to work closely on areas of common interest.
“This collaboration will not only enhance our cooperation with continental judicial organs but it will also benefit our judges to gain skills through training and experience sharing,” Meaza said The chief justice also described the newly signed MoU as “a step in the right direction to ensure the protection of human rights in the country”.
“It will serve as an inspiration for other courts in Africa to embark on a similar journey,” she added. The signing took place on the day that the African Court Judges, along with the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights Commissioners, started their Retreat on strengthening complementarity in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
