Interviews with Waldia residents regarding the current situation. New information about Woldia. Woldia is a city in northern Ethiopia, Woreda, the capital of the North Wolo Zone. The city is located north of Decay and southeast of Lalibela in the Amhara region, at an altitude of 2112 meters above sea level. A notable landmark is a church, Weldiya Gabriel. As of this Saturday, it looked like the TPLF could make inroads into the city of Waldia, prompting Waldia University students to evacuate the campus (as reported by DW Amharic). There were also reports that the TPLF took control of Lobit (a small town between Kobo and Woldia). The distance from Woldia to Kobo is about 50 kilometers. The TPLF started the war to break the so-called “Tigray Siege”. In addition to the Amhara region, TPLF forces also advanced into the Afar region of Ethiopia. Several local provinces (including Afar, Amhara, and Oromia) issued statements condemning the military attack by his TPLF, a terrorist organization designated by the Ethiopian parliament. Earlier this week, the Ethiopian government announced that it had shot down an Antonov plane, which reportedly entered Sudan’s airspace while supplying devices to TPLF forces. The Ethiopian government also announced it had launched airstrikes on selected military targets in Mekelle and other areas of Tigray. The TPLF accused the government of attacking “kindergartens”.The TPLF dominated the federal government and Ethiopian politics for nearly 30 years, before falling from power in 2018 after widespread rebellious opposition.
