Ethiopian artists visiting Tis Abay. Emama Cherenet and Rahel Getu on Tis Abay. The pitfall of this striking scene is that the upstream hydroelectric project has stolen most of its energy from the ‘smoky Nile’, Tis Abay. It’s much smaller than the 400m wide natural waterfall, but the three falls are surprisingly large in August and September. January or February to March, now known as the ‘Blue Nile Shower’, is not worth a visit. That’s enough time for most people to enjoy the trip. Tourism industry operators don’t always provide a definite answer, so it’s a good idea to ask fellow travelers who’ve been to the falls recently about the flow. The ticket office is at the end of the road through the town of Tis Abay. The trail to the falls starts 50 m west from here and along the so-called eastern route he is 1.5 km to the start of a rocky path leading to the 17th century Portuguese Bridge (the first bridge over the Blue Nile). From here the trail passes through small villages, past rows of children selling souvenirs, to reach the main viewpoint. Some people walk back from here, but it is recommended to cross the suspension bridge over the narrow Arata River and descend to the base of the waterfall. You can swim under the water curtain or walk behind it during the dry season. You can take a motorboat trip across the river using the boardwalk above the falls.
